Office 2010 Getting Closer

5 03 2010

On the Microsoft Office website you can now find details of the free upgrades from Office 2007 to Office 2010. The Technology Guarantee programme gives you a free upgrade for customers that purchase and activate a qualifying Office 2007 between March 5th 2010 and September 30th  2010 there are of course conditions but questions are answered on the website. I have heard no definitive dates yet for the eagerly awaited RTM of SharePoint 2010 but rumour has it that it will be publicly available in June 2010. See Update Below

Today, we officially announced that May 12th, 2010, is the launch date for SharePoint 2010 & Office 2010. In addition, we announced our intent to RTM (Release to Manufacturing) this April 2010.

It’s an exciting time for us! We hope you can virtually join us on May 12th at 11am EST to listen to Stephen Elop, President of the Microsoft Business Division, announce the launch. You can register for the event @ http://sharepoint.microsoft.com/businessproductivity/proof/pages/2010-launch-events.aspx.

Office Outlook 2010 as your social media hub

18 02 2010

For those of you who have already downloaded the Beta of Office 2010 you may have noticed the aggregation feature in Outlook 2010, when you now click on an email you will notice at the bottom of the reading pane a new feature which when clicked shows you all the past messages from that person also there is an add button which when clicked takes you to the Outlook 2010 social connector page where you can download currently the 32 bit beta version of the LinkedIn connector

This will allow you to see activity and update your status and colleagues on your LinkedIn network. Also coming soon are connectors for Facebook, My Space and Windows live. How much longer I wonder do we have to wait for someone to write a twitter add in, now that would make my day. I also today found on YouTube a great video on the whole social media revolution which I thought I would share with you.

PowerPoint 2010 Save as video

15 02 2010

We at Twynham School have started to evaluate the new version of office so one of the new features that i was very pleased to see was the ability to save your PowerPoint to a video file. I think in this age of you tube and Google videos this is a perfect way to share your presentations with the world and give PowerPoint more longevity as an application.

This feature i can see will be widely used in the education world giving the teacher the ability to show there PowerPoint in a class and then upload a video of the same presentation to the schools learning platform in our case streamed through SharePoint or an external video site. It is also very simple to achieve just go to the office button and click share as the picture below shows

On our trip to Microsoft US last June we were also shown more feature that have a tie in to the educational world but sadly these are still non-disclosure but as soon as i can i will share these features as and when i can. I have converted one of my presentations that i recently gave at the learning gateway conference at the Belfry and made it available on you tube not a fantastic slide deck but gives an example of what you can achieve very easily to share your presentations with the world. As i explore more of the office applications and find the cool new features that will hopefully help in your day to day work i will let you know.

You can also download the Office 2010 Beta from here.
